National Music Museum Offers Free Gamelan Workshops

Experience the music and traditions of Indonesian gamelan during a free workshop at the National Music Museum led by gamelan musician and educator Joko Sutrisno. Whether you’ve never played gamelan before or are a member of the NMM’s Tatag! gamelan ensemble, the workshop offers an opportunity to learn from an internationally experienced teacher, performer and composer. Friday, October 9 | 5:00–7:00 p.m. Introductory Session New to gamelan? Start here! Learn about the tradition, explore the NMM’s Javanese gamelan and experience playing as part of an ensemble. This session is especially encouraged for new players. Saturday, October 10 | 8:30 a.m.–3:45 p.m. Advanced Gamelan Workshop Designed for current members of the NMM’s Tatag! gamelan ensemble and those considering joining, this session offers more in-depth instruction and an opportunity to develop playing skills under the guidance of Joko Sutrisno. Lunch is provided. Sunday, October 11 | Noon–4:00 p.m. Advanced/Continued Gamelan Workshop Continue the learning with an afternoon of advanced instruction and ensemble practice. This session builds on Saturday’s workshop and is intended for current and prospective Tatag! members. Participants are welcome to attend one or more sessions.
